Bowes was quick to note that the file he compiled did not include email addresses,Victorias Secret, phone numbers or other restricted information, and that everything added to the file was publicly available and in keeping with each user’s privacy settings on Facebook. The file does not represent an attack on Facebook nor a compromising of its security measures: Bowes simply scraped up the information about individual accounts that anyone could have uncovered, and he crammed it into one gargantuan document.

The file is spreading across the Internet rapidly, and it will probably be used much in the way a spammer’s e-mail database is used: to target the unsuspecting with phony friend requests, to send en masse invitations to spam-filled groups, and to coerce them into clicking on phishing links and other malicious URLs.

Are you on the list? You can check by downloading a torrent of the file. Note: It’s nearly 3GB in size.

Meanwhile, it’s probably a good idea to re-check your Facebook privacy settings and make the appropriate changes if you don’t want your profile information public.

If you’ve been waiting patiently for a white iPhone 4, bad news: Apple won’t be shipping them until “later this year” due to delays in the manufacturing process. Meanwhile, a display maker for the iPad warns that it can’t fill orders for the tablet’s 9.7-inch screens fast enough to meet demand.

Apple released a statement early Friday saying that the white version of the iPhone 4, which has yet to go on sale, has been “more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected.”

The news comes just a week after Apple’s “Antennagate” press briefing, during which CEO Steve Jobs promised that the already-delayed white iPhone would go on sale by the end of the month.

So, what’s the holdup? Apple didn’t supply any specifics in its statement Friday, but Engadget reported this week (via Chinese newspaper 21st Century Business Herald) that the company involved in manufacturing glass for the iPhone’s signature shell is “still working out the perfect combination of paint thickness and opacity” to achieve Apple’s trademark “absolute whiteness.”

The black iPhone 4 is unaffected by the white version’s manufacturing speed bumps, Apple says. (Still, would-be customers face a three-week wait on Apple’s online store.)

And then there’s the iPad. LG Displays in South Korea might not be able to meet Apple’s demand for screens until next spring,Paul Smith, Electronista reports. But Samsung, the world’s largest LCD manufacturer, may be taking up some of the slack,Giorgio Armani, Electronica adds.

The iPad isn’t quite as tough for consumers to snag as the iPhone, but it’s a hot ticket nonetheless. Apple’s online store shows seven- to 10-day waiting periods for the 3G and Wi-Fi iPad models. Brick-and-mortar Apple stores have been resorting to (lengthy) waiting lists.

Apple execs admitted during the company’s earnings call Tuesday that it’s still having trouble keeping up with demand for the iPad. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook told  analysts that Apple is selling both the iPad and the iPhone “as fast as we can make them.”

Cook also swore up and down that Apple’s iPhone and iPad supply problems are genuine and that Apple does “not purposely create a shortage for buzz.”

The European Union was also looking at China's "Great Firewall" system of Internet censorship and its impact on European services in China, he said, adding it would be on the agenda at an economic summit expected in November.

"The idea is we could respond to a closing of procurement markets, which are very important, not only in China, but all over. We are facing more and more problems with respect to this and that's why we are working on tools to defend ourselves,Juicy Couture t-shirts," he said.

De Gucht said procurement policies in particular must become more open and transparent, and that Beijing's "indigenous innovation" policy must not freeze European firms out of the information technology and clean energy sectors.

SHANGHAI (AFP) – European Union Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said Thursday European companies were increasingly worried about doing business in China, citing intellectual property protection as a major concern.

The EU is in talks with Beijing to improve conditions for European businesses, but De Gucht also said the bloc was working on measures to demand reciprocity in procurement markets.

The indigenous innovation policy forces European companies to register as Chinese companies to participate in the public procurement market and to bring their intellectual property "into the open", De Gucht said.

German business leaders expressed their concerns about restrictions directly to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at a meeting last week during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel,Adidas, De Gucht confirmed.

"We are actively pursuing this with the Chinese authorities," he said.

"European companies are increasingly worried," De Gucht told reporters at a trade event at the European Union pavilion at Shanghai's World Expo.

"Most of it has to do with the protection of intellectual property because the core of our economy is of course intellectual property," he said.

Foreign business leaders are becoming increasingly vocal about what they see as unfair conditions set by Beijing.
